Every business that moves to the cloud is really making one trade: capital spending becomes operating spending, and control becomes convenience. Sometimes that trade is obviously good. Sometimes a company signs up for Cloud Services expecting savings and discovers eighteen months later that the monthly bill grew teeth. The difference is almost never the technology. It is how carefully the trade was understood before anyone migrated anything.

So let’s be specific about what you are actually buying.

The three letters that matter

Most offerings fall into one of three shapes, and mixing them up is the source of a lot of disappointment.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) rents you the raw ingredients — compute, storage, networking. You still manage the operating systems, the patching, and the applications. Maximum flexibility, and you keep most of the responsibility.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) hands over the layer underneath your application. Someone else keeps the platform patched and running while your team works on what makes your software yours. Less control, considerably less maintenance.

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) delivers the whole user environment from a data centre to whatever device someone happens to be holding. It shines when staff move between locations, when you hire people who bring their own laptops, or when the thought of a stolen machine full of client files keeps you awake.

Choosing badly is expensive in an unusual way: it rarely fails outright, it just costs more effort forever.

Cloud Services and the questions nobody asks in the sales meeting

The demo always works. Ask these instead.

Where does my data physically live? For regulated work, “the cloud” is not an answer. You need a place, a jurisdiction, and evidence about the facility.

What happens to my bill as we grow? Storage that costs little at launch behaves differently at three years of retention. Ask about data transfer charges specifically — that is where surprise invoices are born.

Who answers the phone at 2am? There is a real difference between a support portal and a named engineer who knows your environment. Response times matter more than feature lists on the day something breaks.

How do I leave? Exit terms are the cheapest insurance in technology. Ask how you get your data back, in what format, and how long it takes.

Local, hyperscale, or both

The instinct is to assume the biggest provider is automatically the safest choice. Often it is. Not always.

Hyperscale platforms win on breadth of services, global reach, and the ability to spin something up at midnight without asking anyone. They are less interested in your particular problem.

A regional provider running its own equipment in a known facility offers different advantages: someone who will visit, support from actual humans, help with the migration rather than documentation about it, and a clearer answer to the data-location question. For a company without a large internal IT team, that relationship often matters more than access to a thousand services you will never use.

Plenty of organisations end up with both, and that is fine as long as it was a decision rather than an accident.

Migration is a project, not a switch

The technical part of moving is usually straightforward. What catches teams out is everything around it: line-of-business applications with unhelpful licensing terms, a legacy system nobody wants to touch, workflows built around a shared drive that behaves differently elsewhere, and staff who need a week to stop feeling slower.

Two habits prevent most of the pain. Inventory what you actually run before planning anything, including the odd little application in accounting that only one person understands. And move something low-stakes first, so your team learns the process while consequences are small.

Security changes shape, it does not disappear

Moving workloads off your own hardware hands you a serious upgrade in physical security, redundant power, and network resilience — things almost no small business can build alone.

What does not transfer is identity. Most incidents now arrive through a legitimate login rather than a broken firewall, which makes multi-factor authentication, sensible access reviews, and knowing which accounts hold administrative rights your job regardless of where the servers are. Backup remains yours to verify too. Hosting is not backup, and replication is not backup, because both faithfully copy a mistake.

Good cloud services remove work your team should not be doing — patching hardware, worrying about power, guessing at capacity — and let a small IT function operate like a much larger one. They do not remove the need to understand your environment, ask hard questions about location, cost growth, and support, or verify your backups.
